Sacred Place

Sacred place is found all round the world and has been lost all round the world. Sacred sites are very potent, energetic places, and we are recognising now that these sites belong in a network encompassing the earth. Each site has a different set of ways and rituals, they are localised, maintaining balance, harmony and equity. Our cultural loss of connection to the landscape, and what nurtures our basic existence, is leading to the loss of sacred space. Yet, why we had to loose this connection maybe in order that we can reclaim it in a different way.

In the Altai region of Southern Siberia the local people are creating 'nature parks', where they say where the sacred land lies, rather than the government delineating an area. A central government tends to look at biodiversity, the lack of human intervention, the visual beauty of the landscape and creates the National Park. Here the population can experience a sense of spiritual rebirth, but our tendency and mindset is to regard a National Park as a resource. It is often a place for recreational 'wilderness' activities such as white water rafting, hiking, stretching our physical bodies or for scientific study.

Local nature parks, those sacred places recognised by local people, are treated differently, as there are often protocols for visiting, not everything will be seen or available to visit, they are managed differently as their interaction with humans is valued and aspects of localised spirituality are also included in their management plans. The relationship of nature and human is an active factor of the nature park, with the spiritual and traditional ways being an important component of the involved local community.

To rebuild the culture locally you can be inclusive, using the old traditional ways and also incorporating modern western ways. Behind all the traditions is the understanding that you have to give something back. The universe is a living dynamic evolving system, and the energy of connection between humans and the universe means that all have a place, and when you unite with this you are supported and you support. This is about awareness of our local places.

We gain strength from the sound and silence of these outer places, yet it is not just about geographical locations. It is also about our inner landscapes. We have spaces inside ourselves where our spirits are renewed. A place where we go when the world is confusing us, places where we can re-unite and refresh our lives. Connecting with our inner landscape of wild rivers, seas and hills, spaces inside ourselves, help us to sustain ourselves, love ourselves, and bring about a sense of personal wonder.
